What causes keratoconus?

The exact cause is unknown, but factors include genetics, chronic eye rubbing, and oxidative stress. It usually begins in the teenage years or early adulthood.

Keratoconus cannot be “cured,” but its progression can be slowed or stopped with corneal cross-linking. Vision can be improved with lenses or surgical options.

Corneal cross-linking is a safe outpatient procedure done under anesthesia drops. Mild discomfort or irritation may occur for a few days after treatment.

Not always. Early stages can often be managed with glasses or special contact lenses. Surgery is considered in advanced cases where vision cannot be corrected otherwise.

Cross-linking permanently strengthens the cornea and usually prevents progression. However, regular monitoring is important to ensure stability.

If both eyes are affected, cross-linking may be done separately or together depending on severity and doctor’s advice.
